Your Invitation to join the board
Dear Potential Board Member:
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Bayview Hunters Point Health and Environmental Resource Center (HERC), extends an invitation to join the board for a one-year term. Our next meeting is scheduled for
HERC is in its twelveth year as a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit whose mission is to keep individuals living and working in the community informed of environmental issues that might adversely impact their health. Much of what HERC does is through information and education, thereby encouraging higher quality of health standards. Core services include asthma education and early detection of breast cancer. Consistent with its vision, "a healthy community where health disparities ... are eradicated." HERC, through its work in schools and homes, is striving to identify best practices for managing asthma and asthma-like symptoms. Our organization postulates that the prevalence of breast cancer in the African American communities can be reduced with education.
Duties and responsibilities of HERC board members are the following:
- Ensure sound planning and policie
- Appoint and remove, employ and discharge and, except as otherwise provided in the bylaws, prescribe the duties and fix the compensation of officers, agents and employees
- Ensure sound resources and financial dealings (assist with fundraising public relations; guarantee financial accountability)
- Ensure compliance with legal requirements
- Meet at such times and places as required by the bylaws (in practice, the third Tuesday in September 2008, December 2008, March 2008…)
- Participation in one of the board's committees (board development, finance, fundraising, personnel, program)
