Breathing Counts

Breathing Counts is an empowerment model of community-based health education for persons living with asthma.

In coordination with other agencies, Breathing Counts provides information, education, training & referrals pertinent to asthma management

Goals of Breathing Counts:

  • Reducing asthma episodes & increasing the capacity for self-care
  • Developing awareness for early identification of asthma symptoms
  • Increasing awareness in the community of indoor & outdoor environmental asthma triggers
  • Using a proactive approach to link children with asthma to health care providers
  • Strengthening the knowledge of adult asthmatics regarding asthma management

Asthma Day Camps

HERC offers free day camps for children 6-14 diagnosed with asthma & have a desire to learn more about managing their asthma and also want to enjoy being a kid.


  • HERC provides day services for approximately 10 children
  • A licensed professional teaches the children asthma management techniques & how to recognize triggers and symptoms
  • Other courses are literacy, exercise, nutrition & building self-esteem
