Re:
Board of Directors' Membership Community-based Nonprofit
Dear
Potential Board Member:
On
behalf of the Board of Directors of Bayview Hunters Point Health
and Environmental Resource Center (HERC), extends an invitation
to join the board for a one-year term. Our next meeting is scheduled
for September 18, 2007, at 12:00 Noon. The location of the meeting
will be 828 Innes Avenue, Suite 111, San Francisco, California 94124.
HERC
is in its seventh year as a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit
whose mission is to keep individuals living and working in the community
informed of environmental issues that might adversely impact their
health. Much of what HERC does is through information and education,
thereby encouraging higher quality of health standards. Core services
include asthma education and early detection of breast cancer. Consistent
with its vision, "a healthy community where health disparities
... are eradicated." HERC, through its work in schools and
homes, is striving to identify best practices for managing asthma
and asthma-like symptoms. Our organization postulates that the prevalence
of breast cancer in the African American communities can be reduced
with education.
Duties
and responsibilities of HERC board members are the following:
· Ensure sound planning and policies
· Appoint and remove, employ and discharge and, except as
otherwise provided in the bylaws, prescribe the duties and fix the
compensation of officers, agents and employees
· Ensure sound resources and financial dealings (assist with
fundraising public relations; guarantee financial accountability)
· Ensure compliance with legal requirements
· Meet at such times and places as required by the bylaws
(in practice, the third Tuesday in September 2007, December 2007,
March 2008…)
· Participation in one of the board's committees (board development,
finance, fundraising, personnel, program)
Please
contact our Executive Director, Betty McGee, if you are willing
to become a board member for HERC. Additionally, please visit our
website at www.bayviewherc.org for more program information.
Sincerely,
Ena Aguirre,
Chairperson
