About HERC: Our Mission, Our Vision

Our vision is to empower the residents of Bayview Hunters Point (BVHP) to meet the challenges of healthy living within an urban environment scarred by more than fifty years of environmental pollutants. By working with a consortium of community-based organizations dedicated to developing culturally effective, evidence-based interventions to eliminate and improve the health caused by industrial pollution as well as lifestyle habits.

Bayview Hunters Point Health and Environmental Resource Center (HERC) incorporates the Community First objective of “community involvement” in its program philosophy. HERC will utilize the African American Health Initiative’s innovative, Afro-centered approaches to motivate men to take a more active role in improving their health, the health of their families and neighborhoods. This will occur through opening community dialogue, taking a stand on issues, and pooling strengths, resources, and energy in order to reach men who may be hesitant to focus on their own health.

HERC is funded by San Francisco Department of Public Health & the Mayor's Office.
