The mission of the Bayview Hunters Point Health and Environmental Resource Center ( HERC) is to promote the health and wellness of residents in low-income communities and to improve the environment where residents live and work.
HERC's Primary Goals:To reduce the prevalence of asthma and breast, cervical, and prostate cancer in Bayview Hunters Point by providing education, information, referral and training. HERC also analyzes and provides information on policies governing environmental issues that influence the
health of community residents.
To make available to community residents state-of-the-art technology and literature though use of the Resource Center located at 6301 Third Street. The Center is designed to educate and provide information that will assist with improving the quality of life of individuals at risk for
various cancers and asthma.
Bayview Hunters Point Health and Environmental Resource Center (HERC) incorporates the
Community First objective of “community involvement” in its program philosophy. HERC will utilize the African American Health Initiative’s innovative, Afro-centered approaches to motivate men to take a more active role in improving their health, the health of their families and
neighborhoods. This will occur through opening community dialogue, taking a stand on issues, and pooling strengths, resources, and energy in order to reach men who may be hesitant to focus on their own health.
HERC services :
Women's Health in the Point Project (WHIPP) - provides training, education, and referral services to individuals at risk for breast and cervical cancer.
The Prostate Health Project - educates and encourages men to become proactive and take responsibility for their own health. Begins withpreventive screening guidelines targeting prostate cancer.
The Asthma Program Breathing Counts - provides information, education, training and referrals pertinent to asthma management.
The Home Assessment Project (HAP) - diagnoses the presence of asthma triggers in the home.
School Based Project - targets children who have been diagnosed and/or who have asthma-like symptoms and are eligible to participate in a four- to six- week asthma management curriculum.
BAKA Project- The BAKA Project's goal is to ultimately eradicate health disparities among individuals living in Bayview Hunters Point.
School Tours of the Asthma Resource Center are available with advance notice. The children will receive information and education on asthma management. The Resource Center is stocked with literature, books, and equipment for accessing the Internet.
Workshops for clients and those interested in becoming interns - Asthma , Breast and Cervical Cancer , and Prostate Cancer.
HERC staff members conduct presentations for the schools and community-based organizations regarding asthma.
The Resource Center is available for community meetings on health issues . The Resource Center holds approximately twenty people. At least five days' advance notice is required to use The Resource Center for a community meeting.
